The 2009 Fillmore High Alumni Dinner will be held Saturday, June 6 back at the Fillmore Memorial Building after being held for several years at the city park.  Many people are pleased with this change back to a place that has many memories for many alumni members.  Going back in years, grads can remember sitting at tables and benches made from picking boxes and one by twelves in the old tennis courts where the cafeteria is now, and in the area between the cafeteria and gym, and on the igh school quad before moving to the Memorial Building.
By moving back to the Memorial Building, we will be able to have the area outside for pre-dinner visitations, be able to hang all the class pictures on the walls, as before, and will have areas for visiting after the dinner.  We hope everyone will stay around long after the dinner is over so more time can be spent getting acqainted and re-acquainted with former classmates and friends.
The Board of Directors of is very excited about returning to the Memorial Building.  We look forward to seeing everyone there on June 6th.

Alumni Dinner

Reservations for the 2011 Alumni Dinner are coming in from all over the country.  In order to accomodate those classes who do not want to spend the time or money planning and holding a class reunion at a hotel or restaurant, the alumni board of directors is planning to have time and space for those classes who would like to hold their class reunions at the alumni dinner in the Memorial Building on Saturday, June 4.

It is planned to have the building open at 3:00 p.m. so class members can visit and socialize until the dinner at 6:00, then the main room will be open until 11:00 p.m so more visiting can take place following the dinner.

There will be no need for organizing and planning on the part of each class, except for notifying the class members of the plans for the evening.  All each member needs to do is send in the dinner reservation, along with their check to the Fillmore High Alumni Assocation, and we will take care of the rest.  If any class wishes to get a class roster, contact the alumni office at 805-524-0416 or at staff@FillmoreHighAlumni.com, and one will be sent.  If a copy of the reservation form is needed, contact the alumni office.

We hope that these plans will encourage more classes to have their reunions at the alumni dinner and that more alumni members will attend.  We look forward to seeing many of you there on Saturday, June 4, 2011.

Alumni Dinner

The alumni dinner is fast approaching on the evening of June 12 at the Memorial Building.  Social gathering begins at 4:00 p.m. with dinner at 6:00.  Reservations are still coming in and will be accepted until June 6.  Tickets will be sold at the door for those who belatedly decide to attend.  The Fillmore Historical Museum will be open from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday for those who would like to visit prior to coming to the alumni dinner.  They have completed a special room displaying memorabilia of the history of Fillmore High, and they invite everyone to drop by and see what they have done.

2009 Alumni Dinner

More than three hundred alumni members and guests filled the Memorial Building on Saturday, June 6th for the 96th annual alumni dinner.  Alumni classes of 1932, '35, '36, and '38 were in atttendance, as were representatives from almost every class in the '40's, '50's, '60's and '70's.  An increase in numbers of alumni from the 1980's who attended was noted.  It was great to see so many alumni in attendance from so many different classes.  Alumni came from as far away as Alaska, with many coming from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Tennessee.  It would have been nice if there had been more alumni members from Fillmore in attendance than there were.

The evening began withe the posting of the colors by Boy Scout Troop 406, followed by the invocation by Jacob Zellmer, one of the 2009 scholarship recipients.  An excellent dinner was served by Gary Laird's Butcher Shop and B-B-Q with the assistance of the Bardsdale 4-H.

Preceding the awarding of the alumni scholarships to 17 graduating seniors, Sydia Lopez-Rees, class of '97 and Chad Fore, class of '02, told about their college experiences and how much the local scholarships had helped them during their years in college.

The Honored Classes from 1944, 1949, 1954, 1959 and 1969 were recognized, and the alumni board thanks Biz Basolo, '44; Em Wendel, '49; Ann Scanlin, '54; Bob Morris, '59 and Debbie Curnett and Joe Aguirre, '69 for all their work in getting so many of their classmates to attend this year's dinner.

Door prizes that were contributed by Carmen Zermeno, Lupe Vasquez, Conway Spitler, Nancy Wallace, Gertrude Lovelace and the alumni association were awarded to twenty lucky attendees.  The 50-50 drawing was won by Bill Mayfield, class of '59.

The evening was closed with the singing of the alma mater, but many alumni stayed around afterward to continue visiting and reminiscing.

Next year's alumni dinner will be held on Saturday, June 12, again at the Memorial Building, with the Honored Classes being those whose graduation year ended in 0 and 5.  We look forward to having another great turnout in 2010.

Alumni Dinner

The alumni dinner is fast approaching on Saturday, June 6 at the Memorial Building in Fillmore.  If you haven't sent in your reservations yet, please do so before June 1.  The May issue of Flashbacks is coming out in two weeks, and a reservation form for the dinner will be on the back page.  The day will begin with visiting with former classmates from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., dinner at 6:00 and then visiting can continue until 11:00 p.m.  Six honored classes whose graduation years ended in 4 or 9 are planning reunions for that weekend.  The class of 1989 is planning a class reunion for Sept. 5.  For more information, contact Anita Ruiz at 805-660-4950 or at classof89fhs@yahoo.com.  Martha Fansler Gentry is starting to make plans for the class of 1960 50th reunion next year.  Martha can be contacted at marglen1@aol.com and at 805-524-4377.

Pictures of 2008 alumni dinner

If you haven't already checked out the Alumni Dinner page of this website, please do so, as Scott Duckett, our alumni webmaster, has put 31 pictures from the 2008 alumni dinner on that page.   We thank Bob Cox for supplying us with all the pictures.  If you have previously checked on this page, you saw some errors in some of the names, and for this we apologize, but all the incorrect names have been corrected, and we hope too many people were not upset over this.

Some classes are already starting their plans for the 2009 alumni dinner that will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Memorial Building.  So if your class year of graduation ends in 4 or 9, and if you are planning a reunion, please let the alumni office know so we can put information in the Flashbacks, in the Gazette and on our website.  If any class doesn't want to go to all the effort of planning a class reunion out of town, please plan on attending the alumni dinner as your class reunion.  We will have an area for visiting before the dinner, reserved tables for you at the dinner and will provide an area for visiting after the dinner.  We hope to have many classes at this years' dinner.

The Scholarship Committee is working to update the scoring system for the alumni scholarships prior to handing out the scholarship applications to this year's seniors in January.   The committee hopes to receive more applications and be able to award more scholarships this year, as well as continue to offer Continuation Grants to those alumni who are already attending colleges and universities.  The alumni office greatly appreciates the many donations that come into the office for alumni scholarships from alumni members and friends of this organization.

The next issue of Flashbacks will be coming out in November, thanks to the hard work of Kathleen Penrod McCreary.  She has lots of information from alumni members and friends, which is what makes this newsletter so interesting.  If we did not have input from graduates and others, there wouldn't be a whole lot to publish, so we thank you for your input, and ask you to please keep sending us letters, changes of addresses and other interesting information.  A notice will come out prior to our mailing the next issue, so be looking for it.

Class Reunions

The Board of Directors of the Fillmore High Alumni Association is encouraging all classes who are planning class reunions this year to include the alumni dinner as part of their reunion.  If a class does not want to spend the time, money and effort putting on a separate get-to-gether, we encourage you to plan to use the alumni dinner on June 6 as your reunion site.

The patio area of the Memorial Building is a great spot to meet people and visit prior to the dinner, and areas will also be available after the dinner for more visiting.  Table areas will be set up for Honored Classes, whose graduation year ends in 4 or 9.

We feel that this way of holding a class reunion is much simpler and less expensive than holding a separate reunion on a separate night.

Classes already planning a class reunion for 2009 are the classes of 1959 with Bob Morris in charge and the combined class reunion of 1978 and 1979, with Tricia Urrea Gradias and Mark Ortega planning that meeting.  If any other classes with their graduation year ending in 4 or 9 are planning a reunion, please let the alumni office know and we will include your information in Flashbacks, in the local newspaper and on the alumni website.
