Albert Ray Marple '40

     Albert Ray Marple of Port Hueneme died of Alzheimer's, Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the age of 87.

     Albert was born July 6, 1922 in Fillmore, where he graduated from Fillmore High School in 1940.

     He served in the Navy as a ship fittter first class working on submarines in Hawaii during World War II.

     He married his friend Elizabeth (Betty) Myer on Nov. 22, 1947 in Oxnard and honeymooned at the Wagon Wheel Motel before moving to Herlong.  He was proud of their three sons who all graduated from Hueneme High School.

     He worked for over 30 years as a firefighter at Point Mugu Naval Air Station and San Nicolas Island.

     Albert enjoyed camping and backpacking with his family, he loved watching his boys play (and later umpire) baseball.  He and Betty toured the U.S. and visited every major league baseball stadium in the country.

     He belonged to the 341 Masonic Lodge and High 12 Club.  He and Betty were members of the Escapees RV Club for 25 years, and several Dixieland Jazz Clubs.

     His handmade horseshoe figurine cowboys won several blue ribbons at the Ventura County Fair.

     He is survived by his wife, Betty, of 62 years and his three sons, Larry, Danny and Randy, eight grandkids and three great-grandkids.

     A viewing will be held between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16 at Conrad-Carrol Funeral Home in Oxnard.  A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16 at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.  Memorial contributions can be made to your local Alzheimer's Association.
